Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church - Northridge
2006 Valley Greek Festival
Memorial Day Weekend - May 27th - 29th 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM each day
Get Your Dancing Shoes On: St. Nicholas Church Hosts Valley Greek Festival for 33rd Year
Get a taste of Greek traditions and culture at the 33rd Annual Valley Greek Festival in the San Fernando Valley during Memorial Day weekend (May 27, 28 and 29), from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day at 9501 Balboa Blvd. in Northridge.
Boasting an average of 50,000 guests annually for the admission-free, three-day event, the fund-raiser is the largest festival of its kind in the area. More than 500 volunteers invite you to enjoy an experience for the entire family with live Greek music, dancing, food, children’s games and activities, market and shopping areas.
Nine booths feature:
- Souvlaki (beef or pork shish kebabs) and chicken dinners
- Spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie)
- Tiropita (cheese pie)
- Moussaka (eggplant, potatoes, ground-meat casserole topped with cream sauce)
- Pastitsio (meat and pasta with cream sauce)
- Dolmathes (grape leaves stuffed with rice)
- Gyros (beef/lamb served in pita bread with tzatziki, a yogurt-cucumber sauce)
- Loucanico (Greek sausage grilled to perfection, served with feta, olives and bread)
- Calamari (Greek seafood delicacy)
Fourteen varieties of more than 48,000 pastries, baked by the women of the church, are available for those seeking sweets. Loucoumathes, known as “Greek doughnuts,” are prepared before guests’ eyes. American and Greek coffee pair well with the Hellenic desserts. At the Greek market, specialty food products are for sale. Cooking demonstrations will go on during the weekend.
Vendors will sell Greek music, clothes, pottery and jewelry. Youth group dancers will perform in the entertainment area. Guests are welcome to participate in various circle dances while live musicians play traditional Greek tunes. Kids and adults can enjoy ice cream, figurine painting and several games.
